Poe was born in Boston Massachusetts, January 19, 1809
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, January 19,1809, Poe was the second child of English born actress Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe and actor David Poe, Jr. He had an elder brother, William Henry Leonard Poe, and a younger sister Rosalie Poe. At an early age, Poe’s life started to spiral downward in a nasty sense. His father abandoned their family in 1810, and his mother died a year later from pulmonary tuberculosis, a deathly disease around the time. Soon later Poe was then taken into the home of John Allan, a successful Scottish merchant in Richmond, Virginia, who dealt in a variety of goods including tobacco, cloth, wheat, tombstones, and slaves. John Allan spoiled and aggressively disciplined his foster son and his family. Although his generous foster family embraced him with open arms, Poe still led the life of a glum fellow.
“From childhood's hour I have not been. As others were, I have not seen. As others saw, I could not awaken. My heart to joy at the same tone. And all I loved, I loved alone.”
― Edgar Allan Poe
